What We Know About Election Results in California

first_imgCalifornia Today goes live at 6:30 a.m. Pacific time weekdays. Tell us what you want to see: [email protected] Were you forwarded this email? Sign up for California Today here and read every edition online here.Jill Cowan grew up in Orange County, graduated from U.C. Berkeley and has reported all over the state, including the Bay Area, Bakersfield and Los Angeles — but she always wants to see more. Follow along here or on Twitter.California Today is edited by Julie Bloom, who grew up in Los Angeles and graduated from U.C. Berkeley. Proposition 17, aimed at restoring voting rights to people on parole for felony convictions, passed. The rest, including some key ballot questions and crucial House races, were still too close to call. We’ll have more soon on what the results mean.In other election news: Mr. Mitchell said that according to projections, the final vote count could be between 16 and 17 million, with roughly two million likely to be in-person votes at the polls. While there were reports of long lines in the Sacramento area and Riverside County, the mood at the polls seemed largely to range from serene to festive.- Advertisement – Voters across the state sought out memorable places to play their part in democracy, from Dodger Stadium to a famous leather bar in San Francisco — a marked contrast from the March primary, when hourslong waits frustrated voters, particularly in the state’s most populous county, Los Angeles. In Oakland, voters cast their ballots al fresco with a nice view of Lake Merritt. Workers used tongs to take ballots from voters in their cars.“We get a lot of jokes, like, ‘Can I have a side of ribs with that?’” one election worker told my colleague Thomas Fuller. At Crenshaw High School in South Los Angeles, where the Los Angeles Lakers had sponsored a voting center, my colleague Tim Arango reported that voters saw Tuesday as a day for hope.[Here’s background about key races in California.]I decided to head to Porter Ranch in the San Fernando Valley, where I visited voting centers at a charter elementary school tucked among winding blocks of ranch houses framed by golden hillsides, and at a large church hall near a sprawl of upscale strip malls. The day was quiet, and election workers at both sites said they’d seen a steady flow of voters dropping off or casting ballots over the course of several days. Some voters had taken advantage of the state’s same-day registration process. The election workers said that they encountered virtually no issues with voters wearing masks or following other rules.I thought I’d be able to catch voters with strong preferences for either of the candidates for state’s 25th Congressional District seat, the Democratic State Assembly member Christy Smith or the Republican incumbent Mike Garcia, who as of early Wednesday morning were still locked in a very close battle. But voters I spoke with said they were most focused on the top of the ticket, in spite of the fact that Mr. Biden’s victory in California was essentially a foregone conclusion. They said they looked to trusted organizations — one voter I spoke to cited the California G.O.P. and another mentioned the progressive organization KNOCK.LA — for guidance on ballot propositions. President Trump brazenly and falsely claimed that he had won the election. But ballots are still being counted and tabulated. Here’s a guide to what we can safely say we know and an hour-by-hour guide to when. [The New York Times] If you voted in California, you got an “I Voted” sticker. But, look, you might want another one. You probably want another one. My colleagues made some digital stickers you can download. So have another sticker. Good morning. If there’s one thing we can know for certain today, it’s that a lot of Californians — millions upon millions, more than the populations of many states — voted. (Also, that Joseph R. Biden Jr. won the state easily.)- Advertisement – Proposition 23, an effort to require more oversight of dialysis clinics, failed. And Finally … Proposition 20, an effort to crack down on some types of misdemeanor crimes and roll back some sentencing reforms, failed. What to know about results Around 13.4 million ballots had already been cast, Paul Mitchell, vice president of the bipartisan data firm Political Data Inc., told me early on Tuesday evening, “and that’s not counting a lot of the ballots that are coming in right now.”[Find results for all the California races.]“Raw voter turnout is going to exceed anything the state’s ever seen,” he said.- Advertisement – If they didn’t skip local races altogether, they said they followed party affiliation.“I didn’t vote in 2016,” Parvin Moosavi, 56, told me, as she stood outside Castlebay Lane Charter Elementary School. “But I think everyone should exercise their vote to kick him out.” Updated Nov. 4, 2020, 6:08 a.m. ET Votes are still being counted in California, and will be for days. But with roughly 73 percent of votes reported, some of the races have been called, according to The Times’s tracker. As with other states, Mr. Mitchell said mailed votes tended to skew Democratic, whereas in-person voters were more likely to be Republican. But, as we’ve mentioned, many of the biggest debates the state faced don’t split along clear partisan lines. Here’s where things stand: Proposition 22, the astronomically expensive effort by gig companies to exempt themselves from a new labor law that would require them to treat workers as employees, passed. Proposition 21, which would have expanded local governments’ ability to enact rent control, failed. She was referring to President Trump.Ms. Moosavi said she’d supported Senator Bernie Sanders previously, and while she was disappointed that he wasn’t the Democratic candidate, she felt strongly that Mr. Biden could help restore the middle class and better control the pandemic.A health care worker, Ms. Moosavi said she’s lived in the United States for decades after moving from Iran. But she has family in Europe and if the president were re-elected, she would move there.Outside of a voting center at InChrist Community Church not far away, Irwin Lehrhoff, 91, told me that in 2016 he voted for the president in hopes of seeing “a businessman, not a politician,” in the White House. On Tuesday, though, he cast a vote for Mr. Biden.“It was just too many lies on Covid,” he said. “You can’t have a president you can’t trust.”On the rest of his ballot, Mr. Lehrhoff, a Porter Ranch resident, said he “pretty much followed the Republican Party.”(This article is part of the California Today newsletter. Sign up to get it delivered to your inbox.) And what would happen if the election results were contested? The process for deciding the presidential race has never been straightforward, but this year it’s especially unlikely to be smooth. Here’s what to expect. [The New York Times] Still, you might not have known that California was in the midst of a democratic deluge from the looks of voting centers on Election Day. – Advertisement –last_img read more

7 Defendants May Be Freed in Mercenary Case

first_imgSeven of the 18 persons accused of mercenary activities in neighboring La Côte d’Ivoire may be set free, if their  pleas are accepted by Criminal Court ‘D’ at the Temple of Justice. The 18 men were arrested between 2010 and 2012 in Grand Gedeh County by state security. They were subsequently indicted and charged in 2013 for alleged mercenary activities. In their 19-count “Motion for Judgment Acquittal,” lawyers for the defense argued that witnesses who have testified for prosecution have already admitted that the seven co-defendants knew nothing about fighting in La Côte d’Ivoire. They further argued that the co-defendants should be acquitted as a matter of law, stating that “The state failed to produce evidence against them.”The lawyers said state witnesses had failed to produce evidence showing that any of the co-defendants was arrested with arms, while returning from La Côte d’Ivoire to Liberia, where they were arrested. The defense team added that prosecution failed “miserably” to satisfy the “burden of proof” in the matter as required by law, alleging the evidence was insufficient to convict the men of the charge. They also argued that government failed during the trial to prove their indictments with clear and cogent evidences, as there were material variances (contradictions) in the testimonies of their witnesses. Therefore, the lawyers prayed that “This Honorable Court should accept the motion and discharge the co-defendants from further answering to the charge of mercenarism, and grant unto them such further  relief it may consider just and legal”.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Trust deficit in Guyana

first_imgIt is not hard to discern that trust is a commodity in very short supply in Guyana today. Take, for instance, the reactions to the revelation that there were actually two letters sent by President David Granger to the Chairman of GECOM, James Patterson. The latter’s claim that there is nothing untoward in the second letter, and it does not contradict the first, was supported by the PNC Commissioners. But while this is arguable, the “trust antenna” of the PPP members on the Commission had to have been raised, since they had to actually request the second letter be produced, after having been alerted to its existence by the Leader of the Opposition. It was brought to his notice after it was uploaded to the Ministry of the Presidency’s website, and he declared that there had to be some “fraud” in the making. What exacerbated the PPP’s suspicions on the import of the second letter was that it was used by the PNC Commissioners to then argue for house-to-house registration, which had been the PNC-led coalition’s position all along. The reaction of mistrust by the Opposition Leader and the PPP GECOM Commissioners has to be viewed against the background of the strenuous efforts of the PNC-led Government to hold off the holding of elections as long as possible. Because of the shift in the Government’s initial acceptance that the successful NCM constitutionally mandated elections three months from Dec 21, 2018, the posture of cynicism appears to be in danger of becoming ingrained in our national psyche. This eventuality does not bode well for the development of a more secure and harmonious society, which all Guyanese so strongly desire, and which is materially within our grasp with first oil in sight. It also does not bode well for the development of democratic governance in Guyana, which had been slowly reinstated by the PPP after democracy was restored in 1992, following 28 years of rigged elections by the PNC.Trust, after all, is the cement that holds together any agglomeration of humanity. The very notion of “social” implies a recognition of predictability in the actions of people that has to be undergirded by trust. Absent this crucial element, we revert to the law of the jungle. The Swedish-born philosopher and ethicist Sissela Bok wrote, “Trust is a social good to be protected just as much as the air we breathe or the water we drink. When it is damaged, the community as a whole suffers; and when it is destroyed, societies falter and collapse.”As far as the life of nations go, ours is still in its infancy. But surely the PNC-led Government must recognise that, as a people, it is not only the interests, but the fates of all Guyanese that are interwoven and intertwined. Whatever we may value – be it material, cultural or spiritual goods – we inevitably have to fall back on others to secure it, or at least not to frustrate its acquisition. And this is where trust comes into the picture. This is not to acknowledge that there is a certain element of risk in the matter of trust, which has been defined as “the willingness to act on the basis of the words, actions, and decisions of another.” But the PPP would be foolish to ignore the tendency of the PNC-led Government to make the most outrageous false claims – for instance, that 33 is not the majority in 65 seats — and trust their motives. As a result, rather than give them the “benefit of the doubt” – which is all that is required in the realm of trust in the public arena – the PPP have to assume the worst and take pre-emptive, “defensive” steps.Guyana is at a most critical juncture in our history, where at long last we have the opportunity to realise our potential. We have to develop shared values and goals, but this is possible only if we first allow trust to grow.last_img read more

Ethical buying power: Coffee, chocolate and Fairtrade

first_imgFairtrade is a common-good philosophy that aids better trading conditions for producers and the export of their products (particularly in Africa). In addition, it promotes sustainability associated with trade and in the manufacturing sector. It works by holding both manufacturer and consumer to higher social and environmental standards. While most (96%) Fairtrade products are agricultural goods, such as coffee, cocoa, bananas, cotton, sugar and flowers, others with Fairtrade certification include clothing, cosmetics, gold and consumable goods, such as soft drinks, wine and ice cream. (Image: Creative Commons)• Cadbury Fairtrade choc now in South Africa• Projects aim to empower women in agriculture• Africa dismantling trade barriers • Africa has huge growth potential for e-commerce CD AndersonWhat is Fairtrade? Fairtrade is a non-governmental organisation that sources and co-ordinates the ethical certification of products and their producers. It is aimed at promoting equality and sustainability in farming sectors in the developing world, including Africa, Middle East and South America.Dating back to the 1960s, Fairtrade began with small initiatives by individuals and communities who wanted to make a difference in developing countries. They sought to buy their products in an ethical manner, through paying fair prices, establishing direct trading partnerships with these producers and sharing knowledge and information on production, market and quality requirements. In the 21st century, the Fairtrade philosophy has become a worldwide trend, with Fairtrade practices on every continent, in all regions.Fairtrade is finding traction in Africa and South Africa, where support for local farmers and small-scale is a meaningful contributor to employment and the economy. Throughout the process, from the labour used to manufacture the products, the contents of the products and the selling mechanisms used to market the final product, Fairtrade promotes the equality and sustainability of small-scale agriculture, trade and manufacturing.Infographic by Sifiso Nkabinde What products are Fairtrade? A product that carries the Fairtrade certification stamp has met the organisation’s rigorous standards. These insist that profits from the sale of Fairtrade goods must be worked back to producers and farmers to improve labour conditions, promote sustainable, environmentally friendly farming and manufacturing techniques, and invest back into the business and its people. While most (96%) Fairtrade products are agricultural goods, such as coffee, cocoa, bananas, cotton, sugar and flowers, they include clothing, cosmetics and beauty products, gold and consumable goods, such as soft drinks, wine and ice cream.Popular companies that produce or use Fairtrade products in their manufacturing include American ice cream company Ben & Jerry’s, chocolatier Cadbury’s and over 100 global clothing retailers. In South Africa, Fairtrade products made locally and from Africa include Ciro coffee, Cadbury’s and several established and emerging wine farms, including Fairvalley, House of Mandela and Palesa. Fairtrade products are available from Woolworths – one of Brand South Africa’s 2015 Top 10 Most Valuable Brands – selected specialist food stores and some larger retail supermarkets.Fairtrade quick facts • More than half the bananas sold in Switzerland are products of Fairtrade.• A quarter of all flowers sold in Germany are sourced by Fairtrade.• While the hallmark of Fairtrade has been the export from source country to another region, over the last four years there has been an increase in domestic sales, keeping the Fairtrade cycle local.• Demand for Fairtrade products is growing exponentially in Brazil, India and Kenya.Source: Fairtrade South Africa The business of Fairtrade: the triple bottom line Fairtrade is based on the non-traditional commercial framework of the triple bottom line. Unlike the more traditional profit or loss bottom line, it looks at three levels of impact of products manufactured, marketed and sold: social, environmental and financial.Simply, Fairtrade focuses on items that prioritise the people behind the product, followed by the positive impact the manufacture and consumption of the product has on the environment, and then on whether a profit is made from the product. In South Africa, the triple bottom line means that what is produced from the business, goes back into the operation at all levels. Profits are used to attend to the educational and social needs of the workers: schooling, housing, social awareness, health and welfare. This, in turn, leads to more sustained job creation and employment security. This philosophy falls in line with the ideals of South Africa’s National Development Plan, particularly in the areas of social cohesion, creating more inclusive economies and encouraging active citizenry.  Infographic by Sifiso Nkabindelast_img read more

Heading to buy the wavy model now.The tangle a truthful but and the colour was a little darker then the photograph. Now purchased a second established.Omg, this solution arrived and i was sceptical as non of the curls are noticeable. The you examine the instruction and shake the extension. I received the completely wrong color and it is really incredibly shiny but it can be amazing for the selling price. I study and have attempted including talc to the hair to make it a lot less shiny. Keep over the sink and include from the best of the clips to the finishes. Shake the added off above the sink and it looks like true hair.Genuinely awesome extensions, particularly for the cost. I minimize them down a little bit, to in shape improved with my hair which labored excellent. Only thing to note is that the clips at the best are not connected specifically nicely and two have now occur free which i have had to sew back again on. That becoming said, for the cost you fork out, are not able to complain as well considerably.Pretty rapid and truly worth the value. Match the colour of my hair and are best. One is much more than ample give the thickness and duration. Not absolutely sure if i can straighten them. However the only one problem is that they are a bit shinny if not really worth the rate. This hair piece has stunning waves/curls and is silky gentle, would recommend it as its great for a particular situation fast and uncomplicated to place on,would also propose to layer it to mix in with your very own hair.last_img read more

Mozilla Labs Launches Open Web Tools Directory for Developers

first_imgWe already know that Mozilla has fostered an impressive ecosystem around Firefox and its other products, but today, Mozilla Labs also launched a new directory full of interesting web apps and tools for developers. As Mozilla points out in the launch announcement, there is currently no central index of these tools, and Mozilla would like to fill this gap with the Open Web Tools Directory. One interesting aspect of the directory is that Mozilla decided to eschew a standard, table-based layout for the directory in favor of an HTML 5 canvas based design that focuses on the products’ logos. Because of this, the directory will only work on modern browsers like Safari, Chrome, Opera, and Firefox, but Internet Explorer users will be locked out. Pretty – But Hard to UseAs of now, only a small number of tools are in the directory, but, keeping in style with the purpose of the directory, Mozilla is using a Google Spreadsheet that allows developers to submit their applications. We have to say, however, that the layout of the directory can be rather confusing and given that all a user sees is a product’s logo, it is rather hard to figure out what a tool really does. As Mozilla adds more products, it will only get harder to use, though thankfully, Mozilla does also offer a plainer version of the directory.
