Someone is Making a Graphene Jacket Because Why Not

first_img Graphene is the next big thing in… well, everything. It’s been used to desalinate water, make batteries recharge ridiculously fast, and create a paper-like material ten times stronger than steel. The next frontier for graphene: outerwear, brought to you by the adventurous folks at Vollebak.Experimenting with wonder materials is in the company’s DNA. They’ve dabbled with Kevlar in the past, so it’s only natural that they decided to introduce a graphene garment.AdChoices广告Their initial offering is the relatively nondescript black jacket you see here. Vollebak says it’s “part coat, part science experiment.” Unlike their 100 Year Hoodies (which are 100% Kevlar), the graphene jacket isn’t pure graphene. It’s graphene coated.Vollebak doesn’t get into any real details about the jacket on their website. Does the graphene layer make the coat waterproof without sacrificing comfort and breathability? Possibly. Is it bulletproof? Probably not.At this point, all that’s guaranteed is that this is one of the — if not the — only pieces of clothing you’ll be able to buy in the immediate future that’s made with graphene. That gives it a healthy amount geek cachet, though it’ll no doubt come at a premium. That’s not a surprise if you know anything about Vollebak. Those 100 Year Hoodies? They retail for $330 and $395. They also get rave reviews and can stand up to absolutely ludicrous amounts of abuse. If you were to buy one and it really did hold up for 100 years, you’ve only spent $3.30/3.95 a year on it.That’s not only cool because you could pass it on to your next-of-kin, but also because most $39 hoodies you buy aren’t going to hold up for ten years unless you’re really, really easy on them.Whether or not the graphene jacket is as sound an investment remains to be seen, but c’mon… it’s made with graphene!
