From the Makers of Pokemon Go Harry Potter Wizards Unite

first_imgStay on target After Pokemon Go took the world by storm in summer 2016 (and continues to be quietly super successful to this day) we figured it was only a matter of time before the developers at Niantic applied their hit augmented reality formula to another red-hot #brand. After all, Pokemon Go is really just Ingress but with more popular characters, and eventually folks will catch on that the new generations of Pokemon Niantic can add will never top the nostalgia value of the original 151.We even put together a list of franchises we’d like to see get the Pokemon Go treatment. The Matrix, Jet Grind Radio, Assassin’s Creed, and others all seemed like fine candidates. But in our mind an AR Harry Potter game sounded like the biggest slam dunk (or whatever the Quidditch equivalent of a slam dunk is) in the world. And Niantic apparently agreed because alongside WB Games San Francisco they’ve just announced Harry Potter: Wizard Unite, an AR game set in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World as well as our own.Part of what makes a Harry Potter AR game so exciting is that AR is such a natural fit for the lore. Harry Potter is about an unseen magical community hiding just beneath our normal noses waiting to be uncovered if you know how and where to look. And like any technology, AR sufficiently advanced enough is indistinguishable from magic.Hopefully the game will be better than Harry Potter for the Kinect (RIP).Right now details for Wizards Unite are scarce. In the announcement, Niantic CEO John Hanke says players can expect to “learn spells, explore their real world neighborhoods and cities to discover and fight legendary beasts and team up with others to take down powerful enemies.”But what does that mean? Can we turn real-world locations into Hogwarts houses and join them like Pottermore? Will there be a monster-catching aspect to tie-in with the upcoming Fantastic Beasts films? Will we swing our phone like a wand, similar to the recent Harry Potter mobile VR game? There are so many possibilities!Unfortunately, we won’t know just how enchanting Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be until we learn more details next year. But if it’s Pokemon Go all over again, so enough we’ll all be fighting in the streets over magical blood purity.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.
